About the Directors

CRAIG MAHLSTEDT (Director) Last season, Craig was seen as Matt Brady in The Summer Place production of “Inherit the Wind.” He has been a member of the board of directors of The Summer Place for 10 years and has directed productions of “Picnic”, “On Golden Pond”, and “Come Blow Your Horn”. He is also active at the Ad Hoc Theatre both as a director and performer.

NANCY CHASE (Assistant Director) Nancy is a full time student at Joliet Junior College where she is enrolled in the Theatre Arts program. She has much acting experience ranging from roles in “Close Ties” and “Sunday in New York” to “Orpheus Descending” and “The Lion in Winter”. This is her first association with The Summer Place.

About the Technical Staff

KEN FRYKHOLM (Technical Director/Scene Designer) Ken has finished his second year as an M.F.A. candidate at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Previously he taught art and English for five years in Chicago and five years at Proviso East High School. His most recent productions were “Master Harold and the Boys”, “The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds”, and “The Imaginary Invalid”. To this impressive list of credits Ken adds that he tended bar for 10 years in an Irish pub!

CINDI MANNING (Lighting Designer/Master Electrician) A 1987 graduate of Northern Illinois University, Cindi is currently working as a free lance lighting designer and stage manager with Teresa y Las Preferidas Spanish Dance Company. She has also designed lights for “You Can’t Take It With You”, “Agnes of God”, “Annie”, and “Hannibal Blues”.

STEVE FRANCQUE (Sound Designer/Asst. Technical Director) At Northern Illinois University, Steve has been associated with many shows. Among those for which he designed sound are “A Streetcar Named Desire”, “Little Mary Sunshine”, “The Owl and the Pussycat”, and “The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds”. Steve is pursuing a career in video/film production.

DOUG GIESE (Asst. Sound Design/Tech Crew) Doug is a graduate of Northern Illinois University School of Business. At NIU he was associated with various shows including “Agnes of God”, “Master Harold and the Boys”, “Oliver!”, and “You Can’t Take It With You”. Doug says he is currently looking for employment.

ANGIE DICKENSON (Sound Board Operator/Tech Crew) In addition to her work at The Summer Place this year, Angie is a disc jockey on WKKD.

JULIE NEWKIRK (Tech Crew) Besides being a great furniture stripper, Julie is a full time travel agent. Anybody want to take a trip?

BRUCE FORRESTER (Tech Crew) When not helping out at The Summer Place, Bruce works during the day as an electrical engineer and a carpenter.

About the Cast

JAN MAHLSTEDT (Lenny) Jan’s work at The Summer Place began in 1977. Since then she has appeared many times on The Summer Place stage. Last season she directed the production of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”. Jan is co-founder of Community Players and full time wife of Craig and mother of Curtis, age 8. Jan says now that petticoats are back in style, she can’t wait to try jingle bells!

TERRY HARROLD (Chick) Terry has appeared in many musicals and plays throughout the Western Suburbs. This is her first appearance on The Summer Place stage. Terry is the Communication Arts and Drama Teacher at Naperville North High School.

JOHN WISEMAN (Doc) John has been acting since he was in high school and this is his first appearance on The Summer Place Stage. Most recently he was seen in “Playboy of the Western World”. In addition to his acting, John has sung in rock and folk groups and he plays guitar.

JULANE SULLIVAN (Meg) Julane is returning to our stage after a year off. She was seen at The Summer Place in the 1985 production of “Same Time Next Year”. Most recently you have seen her talent in “A Little Night Music” where she was responsible for designing and building all the beautiful costumes.

MARTHA LIDECKA (Babe) Martha’s acting experience ranges from Stella in “Streetcar Named Desire” to Mrs. Popov in “The Boor”. This is her first appearance on The Summer Place stage.

LESTER LEWIS (Barnette) Lester will be a junior this fall at Vassar College where he is majoring in film. He has many acting roles in both musicals and straight plays to his credit. He says that next to acting, his greatest passion is playing guitar which, to the world’s good fortune, he does in private!
